Senator Schwertner Responds
If you attended our November meeting, you know there was a great deal of spirited discussion with Senator Schwertner about the intersection of Hwy 71 and Old 71 as well as the current state of the Secretary of State’s voter registration system. Today, we received the following two letters from Senator Schwertner.

REGARDING ELECTIONS:
“I also understand that the program’s value has been diminished by certain functions not operating as expected or not fully meeting user needs at the time of its rollout. As a result, my office will be coordinating a meeting with the agency and local Bastrop representatives to ensure that, ahead of the 2026 election cycle, the agency heeds feedback from counties served and improves the system based on the practical challenges you’ve identified.”

REGARDING HWY 71/OLD 71
“[…] my office is organizing a meeting with TxDOT leadership to review the safety challenges at the eastern Old 71/SH 71 junction, the expected traffic impacts from ongoing development, and residents’ concerns about potential neighborhood routing. […]
I have asked TxDOT to meet directly with members of the affected community to ensure questions are answered and concerns are addressed.“
